Flocking to the Farm.

Once again, it has taken me far too long to get back to my writing. The progress I have made on my mental health has come to a stand still making it really hard to be as productive as I would like to be. Not to mention, my midterms had me buried in the books But enough with the excuses, here is what I have been up to.

My brother’s visit came to an end around the same time that I welcomed eleven new friends to the homestead. A huge thank you to him for getting the old coop ready for them before he left. The flock is adjusting well only they don’t like to roost but I think they have had that option before, so I am hoping that time will help them adjust to not sleeping out in the open.

When I first went back to school I downsized my farm by getting rid of large large portion of my animals including my flock of chickens. And honestly I missed them. I missed hearing them lay eggs and hearing the rooster crow in the morning. My home was just missing the sound of the birds and not too mention the eggs. I hated having to spend so much on a dozen eggs. So, in less then a year I got chickens back on the farm and I have loved every minute of it. Even the day I had to chase escaped hen leaving me late for work and the score hens: 1 and Anna: 0. I had to wait for her to go to sleep before I could catch the little clucker. Even though I did get her back up safe and sound I still give her the victory cause I looked like a fool trying to catch her. This new flock hasn’t had the chance to familiarize themselves with me and trust that I won’t hurt them. They still run from me, but given time I know they’ll get used to me.

And now, despite the cold I have enough eggs I could start selling them. In fact, I have already sold two dozen. I have also been using as many eggs As I could in my dopamine afternoon in my kitchen where I managed to bake way too many not so healthy deserts and an attempt at making pumpkin puree.

I had this surprise, or random, pumpkin plant pop up near my goose house. It gifted me with three small white pumpkins that after I quick google search I learned were interchangeable with the more traditional orange pumpkins. Meaning, they were just as edible and perfect for making pumpkin puree. But once I cut into the pumpkins I realized that they were already rotten which made for the perfect pig food.

I spent two days obsessed with wanting to make pumpkin puree I couldn’t understand why. But you know what? I bought me a pumpkin and finally made the thing. I now have enough puree for a pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread and two pumpkins pies for each Thanksgiving and Christmas alike. What can I say? It was a big pumpkin. I also tried roasting pumpkin seeds for the first time. Only I did not get any pictures. I tried making one tray salty and one tray sweet. I burnt the sweet one but the salty turned out pretty good.

I did all this procrastinating on homework which I did finally get done. Only… I got it done trying to avoid cleaning up my living room where my Great Dane’s teddy exploded everywhere. It was a big bear and now it is deflated and eyeless after months of him dragging it around. Its still a mess as I’m writing this post. I should really throw the bear away but it is his last toy. My Great Dane has already tried moving on to my shows and I do not have another toy for him until payday comes around again. If anyone has any old stuffed animals they would like to give away please consider donating to a Great Dane’s playtime. Just leave a comment below and help spare my shoes.
