For the past few weeks my brother has been staying with me and helping me around the house. And he has been immensely helpful to me and my grandparents who decided to come up and cut my grass for me. Well, let me be honest. I repel riding lawn mowers, as soon as I get them fixed they break again when I sit on them so I desperately needed my grass cut.

But I digress, my little brother has helped me not only build a pig house for my new babies, but he has also helped cut grass, put up new sheet rock in my pantry, painted said sheetrock, tiled the pantry floor, and built me a new fire pit in my front yard. Not to mention, my dogs love the company as I finish up my final days at work. This kid loves to stay busy. I had to actually force him to stop and take a break the other day. It might help that I don’t have a TV (long story) or very good internet access but still this kid does not stop. He loves to be doing something, constantly moving and I am forever grateful for it because without him I would not have half the stuff he did finished.
I know you’re probably thinking that he should be in school and believe me my whole family has tried to get him interested in school but he’s stubborn. He’s only interested in working and making money. He is working on his GED though and trying to get that taken care of. Maybe one day he’ll decide to go back to school but that day is not today. Today, he wants to work.

We had ripped out the shelving system and walls months ago so it was long overdue to get some put back up. Thanks to him, my house is slowly but surely becoming whole again. Starting with my kitchen. My house hasn’t seen flooring in a very long time and there is no excuse for that, only poor mental health and very little time and money to get things installed like they should be. Things are changing for the better and the house is included but between work, school and my mental health I have a hard time getting things fixed on my own. So having a handy brother is… well, handy.
Him coming to help me isn’t the only reason I love his company. He’s great for a good laugh and well just his company in general is nice. I don’t know about the rest of you but living alone can be… quiet. Sometimes, when I am home the only conversations I have is with my animals and the day that they start talking back will be the day that I begin to question reality.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the independence of living on my own and the peace that comes with it, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone around to make the house not seem so quiet. That silence is the hardest part of being on my own. Growing up with a lot of siblings there was always noise of some kind happening and then in college living with roommates, there was always something crazy going on somewhere in the house. Even though it’s been years since I have lived in any of those environments I still miss the “noise” of other people. Do you know what I mean?
His work aside, my brother may never know just how important his visits are to me. His company fills the silence that can get overwhelming sometimes. Do you have siblings that you cherish time with?
